Domain Names & Directories
A domain name usually consists of 2
or more parts, conventionally written separated by dots,
such as example.com.
- The rightmost label conveys
the top domain (for
example, the address www.example.com has the
top-level domain com).
- Each label to the left specifies a
subdivision or subdomain of the
domain above it. For example: example.com is a
subdomain of the com domain, and
www.example.com is a subdomain of the domain
example.com. In theory, this subdivision can go
down 127 levels. In practice,
some may have shorter limits.
- A hostname refers to a domain name that has one or more
associated IP addresses; ie: the 'www.example.com'
and 'example.com' domains are both hostnames,
however, the 'com' domain is not.

A web directory or link
directory is a directory on
the worldwide web. It specializes
in linking to other sites
and categorizing those links. A web
directory is not a search engine
and instead it lists web sites by
category and subcategory. The categorization is usually based
on the whole web site, rather than one page or a set of
keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only one
or two categories. Directories often allow site owners
to submit their site for inclusion and editors
review submissions for fitness.
